Sit for Good News! Students stage sit-in for schools in Uganda - "I never thought I'd be thankful for a pencil." - Shrewsbury, MA
how it works.
Sit for Good is BT's new K-12 service learning
campaign. Participants in Sit for Good agree to raise awareness about
the educational inequalities that exist in our society by giving up
their desks and other classroom resources for a day. In addition, they
commit to raising funds to provide learning space for thousands of
current and future students at BT primary academies in sub-Saharan
Africa.
the goal.
BT's goal for this academic year is to have 1,000 classrooms across the
USA Sit for Good and, together, raise $45,000 to support current and
future BT academies throughout Uganda. That's just $45 per class.
how?
BT has developed a wide variety of classroom resources for students and teachers interested in Sitting for Good! All resources have been approved by teachers, for teachers!
from our partners at PBS...
BT has also partnered with PBS WIDE ANGLE through their Time for School Series (details below from WIDE ANGLE's web site) to provide teachers and participants in Sit for Good with additional resources to help their students understand what it is like to be a student in other areas of the world. We encourage you to begin by sharing the Time for School Series with your students and then take action by Sitting for Good for students at BT academies in Uganda who experience many of the same challenges each day as those featured in the documentary.
fundraising.
Every dollar counts. $1 buys nine clay bricks, $2.50
buys a box of nails, $10 buys a 10ft length of gutter, $20 buys a desk
for a BT student... In short, what you raise will go directly towards
providing learning space for current and future students at BT
academies in Uganda, giving many their first opportunity to learn
inside of a classroom. Ever. Pretty cool, huh?
before you ask...
Yes, we are aware that sitting on the floor for one day doesn't come
close to experiencing the realities that millions of students in
developing nations face each day. But - it's a start. We think it's important to take action in any way, shape, or form that you can.
As students & teachers in the states, you have access to incredible
educational opportunities and we simply ask that you make the best of
them. We may be biased but, we think that providing an education for students in Uganda seems like a great place to start.

"WIDE ANGLE’s unprecedented, award-winning 12-year documentary project, Time for School, returns in 2009 with
visits to seven classrooms in seven countries to offer a glimpse into the lives of seven extraordinary children who are struggling to get what nearly all American kids take for granted: a basic education. We started filming in 2002, watching
as kids first entered school in Afghanistan, Benin, Brazil, India, Japan, Kenya and Romania, many despite great odds. Several years later, in 2006, we returned to film an update — and now, three years later, we travel to check in on our
young teenagers who are making the precarious transition to middle school."
