The Davidson College Symphony Orchestra is lending a helping hand this year with “Concerts for a Cause.”

Director Tara Chamra said the idea stemmed from her students, many of whom are very involved in community service organizations.

In the past, the music department had successfully raised money for Hurricane Katrina, and Chamra wished to carry that same idea on throughout this season.

“I wanted to find a way to connect the music with their passion for community service, so I sent out an e-mail asking the students what organizations were important to them,” she said.

She received an enthusiastic response from the 55-member orchestra and eventually narrowed the list down to Hole in the Wall Gang Camps, Building Tomorrow, Habitat for Humanity, VH1’s “Save the Music” and the American Stroke Foundation.

“All of our concerts are free and donations are encouraged, but not required,” Chamra said. “We just want to raise as much money as we can for this diverse group of organizations, and hopefully continue the ‘Concerts for a Cause’ series next season as well.”

At the beginning of each concert, an orchestra student will share information about the organization being supported that evening and remind the audience that 100 percent of the donations will be going to that organization. Chamra hopes that around $1,250 can be raised at each concert.

“I hope we can all come together to celebrate music and know we are supporting something great,” she said.

CONCERT DATES:
Nov. 19 to benefit the American Stroke Foundation
Feb. 18 to benefit VH1 Save the Music
April 15 to benefit Building Tomorrow
May 5 to benefit Habitat for Humanity
