What’s in your backpack?

Students across the country are headed back to school this week. And even if you don’t have kids or siblings of your own, it’s a hard fact to miss. For weeks, even months now, stores everywhere you look have been having “back-to-school” sales. My cousin, a 4th grade teacher, told me about one store’s weekly deals where teachers can purchase certain items in bulk for a penny a piece.

Despite these deals, it’s amazing how quickly things add up. It’s also amazing what kids are carrying around in their backpacks these days.

At the end of the school year last year, one Indianapolis teacher did a quick poll of her fifth grade class: “What’s in your backpack?” Her students answered with “books, cell phone, pencils, snacks, recorder, trash, iPod, laptop, DSi, binder, textbooks, money, PSP.”

A Nintendo DSi alone could give a child in Uganda access to three years of school at a Building Tomorrow academy.

Now think… if you took that $8 you usually spend on extra notebooks and instead put it towards our campaign on One Day’s Wages you can join us in providing 325 children in Uganda with a school to attend.
