Buy a Brick, Build a School

How often do you spend $1 on an impulse? What if you could put that $1 to better use…and build a school?

You can. $1 can purchase 10 bricks for a primary school for 325 kids in Uganda…many of whom have never had the chance to go to school before.

by the numbers…

  • 1 brick in Uganda = $.10
  • 1 primary school = 24,000 bricks
  • 2400 paper bricks = 1 school’s worth of bricks in uganda

here’s what to do

1. Find a location
You’ll want to sell your bricks in a well-trafficked area at your school…dining hall? entrance? courtyard? You know your school best. You’ll also need a blank wall or a large piece of plywood or poster board that can stand on its own to display your bricks, so plan accordingly.

2. Set a goal
If everyone in your school bought a brick, how much would you raise? While it takes 24,000 bricks to build a school, it only takes about 3,000 per classroom. Think you can sell 300 bricks; enough for one classroom?

3. Print your bricks! »

4. Spread the word
Flyer, Facebook, email, speak, present, write, blog, you name it!

5. Sell them everywhere
Contact local businesses & organizations to see if they’d be willing to sell the bricks, too.

6. Follow-up with BT
Don’t forget to send in your donations, a brief overview and any photos you might have taken of your event once it is over!
