The first step in building a tomorrow is building a school.

Construction Model Our Primary Schools

Why We Build Schools

The Uganda Ministry of Education has identified over 1,200 parishes without a formal primary school. When a child doesn’t have access to a school, it impacts every facet of their life - from worldviews to life expectancy to likelihood of violence and prevalence of disease. A school is a spark which begins to shape it all.

That’s why we we work hand-in-hand with local communities and governments in Uganda to construct new primary schools where no formal primary school exists.

Four students wave and laugh on the path outside their school.

Our Construction Model

Our primary schools are built on the excitement for education our partner communities share with us. By engaging the local community in our construction model, the school becomes a source of pride and acts as a catalyst for change throughout the entire community.

1. Identify a Community

Working with Uganda’s Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Education alongside local leaders, we identify communities in rural Uganda with little or no access to a primary school and a strong commitment to education.

2. Establish a Partnership

We offer to fund building materials and skilled labor in return for a donation of at least 3 acres of land, 15,000 hours of labor, and a community’s promise to support the school in the long term.

3. Foster Community Buy-In

Building Tomorrow’s Community Development Officer organizes local community members to form committees which oversee construction and management of the school.

4. Build the School Structure

Together, we build a 10-room primary school including seven classrooms, teacher’s office, and meeting rooms, along with a nursery, latrines, and a field for play. Each school has capacity to serve 315 students in grades Primary 1 through 7, and is equipped with necessary infrastructure for students with physical disabilities.

5. Secure Government Support

We work with the local government to recruit qualified teachers and furnish each room with desks and seats, funded by the Ministry of Education. The community funds a nursery teacher, additional resources, and programming at their own discretion. After the school is opened, it will become a public government-aided school.

6. Open the School

The community hosts a ceremony to celebrate the completion of the school. Our schools are always opened at the start of the first or second term of the Ugandan school year.
