…and then there were eight!

On Monday, January 11, amidst an eager crowd of community members and volunteers, BT staff and local leaders, Building Tomorrow broke ground on its eighth academy: the Building Tomorrow Academy of Bubeezi, supported by the Engage Network.

The Academy, located in Nyomero, Uganda, is approximately one hour from downtown Kampala. Community members in and around Nyomero have been hoping for a new school for quite some time due to the distances currently traveled by students wishing to attend class—many walking at least five kilometers to the nearest primary school. In addition to Nyomero, the future Academy will serve the villages of Jjanya, Ziwugwe, Lwanga, Kalagala and Mpigi town.

The Vice Chairman and Chairman of Nyomero and surrounding villages have pledged their support to Building Tomorrow and have strongly endorsed the construction of a new school building in the area. Approximately 150 parents and community members have also pledged their support to the project in a community-wide charter signed prior to the start of construction. In line with Building Tomorrow’s cost-sharing model, they will volunteer approximately 25,000 hours of labor over the coming months to construct the Academy.

The Academy marks Building Tomorrow’s eighth in Uganda and its first in the Mpigi District. Building Tomorrow’s other academies are located throughout the Wakiso and Kiboga Districts.
