Building Tomorrow 2011 Annual Report

The world is facing a hidden and silent emergency in education. Cameras will never capture children going hungry for want of education, or lives devastated for want of learning. Yet there is overwhelming evidence that disadvantage in education costs lives, undermines economic growth, fuels youth unemployment, and reinforces national and global inequalities.

We’re working to change that. Building Tomorrow in the United States

Over the last year, Building Tomorrow has celebrated some incredible milestones. We broke ground on our 10th academy, made a five year, 60-academy commitment at the Clinton Global Initiative, celebrated our fifth birthday with a special message from Honorary Chairman Archbishop Desmond Tutu and most of all, congratulated the first class of Building Tomorrow academy graduates. Yeah, we’ve been busy. As a team, we continue to draw our inspiration from the growing list of campuses, high schools and even youth groups who are joining the call of Building Tomorrow. We’re proud to say Building Tomorrow has created classroom space for 3,000 students since our founding in 2006, but we know far, far more must be done. According to the World Bank, nearly 38 million children in sub-Saharan Africa are out-of-school. That’s our call to action. We invite you to join us—to respond to what Gordon Brown so perfectly describes as ‘a hidden and silent emergency,’ to empower young people to be at the heart of lasting social change and to deliver a life-altering education to thousands, and hopefully millions of children in sub-Saharan Africa. After all, that’s what Building Tomorrow really looks like.

One of Building Tomorrow’s most successful and popular campaigns is OneBrick. Nearly every Building Tomorrow chapter and supporting school takes part in one way or another. The basic idea is simple: paper bricks, modeled after those used on-site in Uganda, are sold for $1 and the proceeds purchase bricks for a new academy. $1 buys 10 bricks!

We commit to increase access to quality education

for tens of thousands of school-going age children throughout East Africa. Through this commitment, we will leverage the philanthropic power of U.S. universities to construct at least 60 community-built, stakeholder-sustained Building Tomorrow academies, and further develop the teaching capacity of at least 450 rural-based teachers.
